The Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD), working in collaboration with Miramonte High School and the Miramonte Boosters Club, is pleased to announce that upgrades to The Bill Brown Aquatic Center are moving forward, with a general contractor now selected for the construction project.

Following a competitive public bidding process completed in December 2025, the AUHSD Board of Education approved Waterworks Industries' bid—more than $2.5 million—with final Board approval on January 19, 2026. Waterworks Industries, a Windsor, California–based aquatic design and construction firm, will work closely with AUHSD to deliver the district-funded scope of work, which includes renovation of the pool shell and replacement of the surrounding concrete deck. This construction project is funded through the District's Building Fund, which is legally restricted for facilities maintenance and capital improvement projects and does not draw from funds used for teacher salaries or classroom instruction.

"Selecting Waterworks Industries as our general contractor is a major milestone in delivering critical, long-planned improvements to the Miramonte pool," said Nick Carpenter, AUHSD Associate Superintendent of Business Services. "The District and Waterworks Industries have begun pre-construction planning to ensure the work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards."

The Miramonte pool construction will occur in two phases, with Phase 1 beginning this summer, and will be carefully coordinated to minimize disruption to students and staff. Additional details on phasing and timelines will be forthcoming.

BOOSTERS FUNDRAISING FOR NEW POOL LIGHTS
The core pool upgrades—refurbishment of the pool shell and replacement of the concrete deck—were approved by the AUHSD Board of Education as part of the District's 2025 district-wide capital improvement plan. In parallel with the District's long-term planning, the Miramonte Boosters Club launched a dedicated aquatics capital improvement campaign in summer 2025 to support community-funded enhancements that fall outside the District's core project scope.

Boosters' immediate priority is raising funds for new stadium-quality pool lighting, an approximately $300,000 investment. The lighting bid includes all system components, installation labor, and 25 years of energy monitoring, maintenance, and repair service. To align with construction sequencing, the lighting must be installed during Phase 1, making May 2026 the deadline for Boosters to secure full funding. To date, Boosters has raised $115,000—nearly 40% of the lighting goal—through The Mats Fund (www.MatsFund.org).

"With AUHSD's investment and the selection of our general contractor, the Bill Brown Aquatic Center renovation is officially underway," said Ben Campopiano, Principal of Miramonte High School. "This is a pivotal moment for our community. If our Boosters Club can capitalize on early fundraising momentum, adding stadium-quality pool lighting during Phase 1 this summer would significantly improve safety, usability, and school pride, and create a facility our students and families can be proud of for years to come."

The pool lighting initiative is part of Miramonte Boosters' broader $600,000 aquatics capital campaign on The Mats Fund, which also aims to fund new starting blocks, exterior paint, windscreens, sound improvements, branded signage, donor recognition, and elevated team and spectator spaces.

"Fundraising for the pool is the most ambitious capital campaign Miramonte Boosters has ever undertaken," said Lee O'Haver, President of Miramonte Boosters. "We'll need help from the entire Orinda community, at every level, to bring this shared vision to life. We're encouraged by the strong aquatics community support we've seen so far, and by our past success fundraising for the new outdoor stadium scoreboard benefiting multiple athletic programs."

Originally constructed in 1960, the Miramonte pool serves student athletes in physical education classes, the Mats Swim and Mats Polo programs, and several community swim and club water polo partners. AUHSD, Miramonte High School, and Miramonte Boosters remain aligned in their shared goal of reimagining a modern, accessible aquatics center that will serve students and the community for generations to come.
