The Miramonte boys water polo team started off their season with a bang, defeating last year's NCS champions De La Salle High School 13-11 last Friday. However, the game didn't go as planned for the first three periods. Back and forth throughout the first half, the Matadors were losing by three at halftime. However, on the back of several goals by senior players Grant Kurtz '24 and Henry Engs '24, the team clawed their way back into the match. The Matadors went on a 5-2 goal run, and Miramonte tied up the game with just four minutes remaining. Then, a huge goal by junior Patrick Stice '24 put the Mats up by one with two minutes remaining. His shot was quickly followed by two goals from Engs, helping the team pull away with less than a minute remaining. This is the Matador's first win against the Spartans in the past two years, signifying a hopeful future in Mats Water Polo.
The Matadors head down to Newport Beach for the South Coast Tournament starting Friday, September 14th, followed by the beginning of league play against Campolindo High School on September 20th.
