Miramonte High School Announces Mike Shaughnessy as New Head Basketball Coach
April 26th, 2024
Mike Shaughnessy has been named as the new head Basketball coach at Miramonte High School, Athletic Director Sean Hennessy announced on Friday. Shaughnessy brings to Miramonte an impressive background as a basketball coach, basketball trainer, and former special education teacher.
"We're absolutely thrilled to announce Mike Shaughnessy as Miramonte's next men's head basketball coach," stated Hennessy. "After an extensive search and thorough evaluation of numerous highly qualified candidates, Mike emerged as a standout contender from the get-go. Feedback from those who've crossed paths with him speaks volumes about his dedication, basketball knowledge, and ability to mold young men into cohesive teams. We are so excited to extend a warm welcome to Mike and his family to Miramonte."
Shaughnessy holds a BA in Recreation Administration from Kean University, where he was a standout athlete on the basketball court. Following his collegiate playing career, Mike transitioned into coaching and teaching. He currently is an individual basketball trainer. During his time as a coach, Shaughnessy has consistently shown dedication to nurturing student-athletes who thrive academically, athletically, and within their communities. His coaching approach prioritizes teamwork, tough defense, a positive culture, and a steadfast drive for improvement, values that closely resonate with Miramonte High School's mission.
"I am honored to be the head coach of the Miramonte boys basketball program. As we look to grow the culture of our teams to championship caliber, we will need the support of our Matador community to help get us there. I want to thank the administration and the support of our parents for this opportunity. I am beyond excited and eager to get started with the team!"
Shaughnessy previously served as Head Coach at Northgate High School and led Northgate to their first Open Division postseason appearance in school history. The playoff appearance also resulted in Northgate's first playoff win in seven years and first California Interscholastic Federation appearance in 20 years. Shaughnessy was awarded West Coast Preps Coach of the year after the season.

What Others Say
"From the moment I witnessed Mike's coaching acumen, I noticed his endearing qualities as it applied to the teaching of the "game." Mike is genuine, focused, quiet, but a person with a presence and understanding of the fundamentals of this sport that I had not witnessed in quite some time. Mike is a mature individual who possesses strength of character, great leadership ability, and a total dedication to his work. He is creative, innovative, and blessed with the rare ability to communicate and motivate people of all ages and backgrounds. Regardless of the task, practice planning. individual player improvement or "in game" coaching, the result is always the same, efficiency, professionalism, and ultimately, success. At a time when many coaches in this business have a difficult time establishing appropriate values, Mike has always had his priorities in the proper perspective – the kids come first. I am truly excited for Mike and this potential opportunity, but honestly, more excited for you to have a potential Division I level individual, coach your student/athletes at Miramonte".  -- Mr. Michael J. Gatley, Supervisor of Athletics, Health and Physical Education at Mainland High School
