Miramonte Run Game Dominates, Matadors Beat Pinole Valley High School 59-0

By Quincy Obradovic, Staff Writer at The Mirador

The Miramonte Matadors football team continued their win streak last Friday night, dismantling the Pinole Valley High School Spartans 59-0. Winning their third consecutive game to begin the season, the Mats once again dominated in all three phases of the game. On the first play, Carson Blair delivered a strike down the field to Andrew Bjornson for a 31 yard touchdown. This theme continued as the Mats could not be stopped in the first half, scoring a touchdown on all but one possession. By the end of the first half, Miramonte led 49-0. With a running clock being in effect for the entire second half, the Mats played ball-control football in order to wind it down, as the game had been pretty much decided. Offensively, they were nearly flawless. Consistently being set up with good field position, the Mats couldn't be stopped. Through a dominant running attack propelled by the offensive line, the Mats physically overwhelmed the Spartans to the tune of 275 rushing yards, 9.5 yards per attempt, and 6 rushing touchdowns. Gabe Roman, Armin Emadi, Charlie Hwang, Luke Milmoe and Mitch Reichenbach all found their way into the end zone through the ground attack. The Mats only passed the ball nine times, as the unstoppable running attack gave them no reason to do so very often. Defensively, the Mats prevented the Spartans from setting foot in the red zone all game. Shutting down both the running and passing game while accumulating 11 tackles for a loss, the Mats left the Spartans offense frustrated all night. Three defensive turnovers were created, a fumble recovery by Harry Smith, and interceptions by Rhys Hire and Andrew Bjornson. Special teams-wise, senior Rhys Hire was flawless, going 7-7 on PAT attempts, along with drilling a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter. Jack Quinnild scored on a 47-yard punt return touchdown, out-running the entire Spartans punt team. Following this dominant performance, the Mats move onward, opening league play this Friday at home versus the Northgate High School Broncos.
