McNair played as a standout athlete for Stanford University, where he earned three-time All-American honors in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Representing the United States national team with 115 international caps through the early 1990s, he competed in major events including the 1993 FINA World Cup and the 1994 Goodwill Games. McNair's international career peaked with a gold medal win at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, alongside a gold at the 1991 Summer Universiade in Buffalo, New York. He represented the U.S. at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where the team finished seventh in the men's water polo tournament. After his playing days, which included two professional seasons in Italy, McNair transitioned into investment banking. Notably, during his career, he appeared in the 1994 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and guest-starred in a Baywatch episode with teammates, highlighting his visibility beyond the pool.
