CAROLYN SCHULER JONES, '60
As a Pre-Title IX female athlete, Carolyn Schuler Jones faced limited opportunities to compete for Miramonte, as the school did not have a girls swim team at the time. While swimming for the Berkeley YWCA, she went to the AAU National Championship. As a 17 year old, Carolyn made the US Olympic team to represent her country at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. At those games, she won a gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly with an Olympic record tome of 1:09.5 and a second gold medal as a member of the 4x100 meter medley relay. The winning US medley relay set a new world record of 4:41.1 in the event final. Carolyn was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1989.
