KAREN MOE, '71
Karen Moe was a pre-Title IX swimmer who, during her illustrious career, held four world records, two Olympic records, and nine American records. She set the first world record when she was just 17, the summer after her junior year at Miramonte. She was the gold medalist in the 200 meter butterfly in the 1972 Olympics, a member of the 1973 US State Department Goodwill Tour of the People's Republic of China as part of “ping pong diplomacy,” and captained the 1976 US Olympic Swim Team. There she placed 4th in the 200 butterfly behind three East Germans, later found to have been participants in the state-sponsored steroid doping program. Moe went on to become the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at University of California, Berkeley (1978-1992) and was the 1987 NCAA Coach of the Year, the first female to be so honored. She is the first person to be inducted into the both the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the American Swim Coaches Hall of Fame.
