MIKE MACDONALD, '99
“Big Mike” MacDonald competed in football and wrestling at Miramonte. As a football player, he was named All-Contra Costa Times in 1998 and SF Examiner All-Metro in 1998. He helped lead the Matadors to NCS titles in 1998 and 1999. In wrestling, Mike became the first freshman wrestler to win a heavyweight league championship in DAL. In his senior year, he took third place at the state championships. Mike also played club rugby for Lamorinda while in high school. After Miramonte, he followed in his father’s footsteps and attended UC Berkeley to play both football and rugby. From 2000 to 2004, Mike helped Cal win several national championships as a prop on the rugby team and was named All-American each year. While at Cal, he began a long and successful career on the US National Team. Mike played for the Eagles in Rugby World Cups in 2003, 2007, and 2011. Mike also played professional rugby in England from 2005 to 2012. While playing for Leeds, he was named Player of the Season for 2007-2008. In 2014, Mike retired as the all-time record holder for most international appearances for the US National Team. Mike has returned to Berkeley as a coach on the Cal Rugby Team.
