JON SVENDSEN, '71
Jon Svendsen played water polo and basketball and swam at Miramonte. He was named All-American in water polo in 1970 and 1971. Jon went on to UC-Berkeley, where he played water polo and swam. He was a three-time All-American from 1973-75 while leading the Cal Men’s Water Polo Team to three consecutive NCAA titles and a combined record of 72-9 during that span. He was NCAA All-American in 1971, 1973, 1974 and 1975, and NCAA MVP in 1973 and 1975. In 1975, Jon was named the Collegiate Player of the Year, Pac-10 Player of the Year, and NCAA Tournament MVP. At Cal, he also earned All-American honors in swimming from 1971-74. Following his career at Cal, Jon was a regular on the US National Team for a decade. He was a member of the 1980 US Olympic Team that boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow. He earned a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Jon has been inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
