DON PHILLIPS (1955-1988)
Don Phillips was a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Miramonte from 1955 to 1988. Over the years, he coached cross country, football, basketball, and track. He was the first ever athletic director at Miramonte when the school opened in 1955. Don was honored in the 1973 yearbook, as his leadership during the school’s first sixteen years resulted in more championships than any other school in the Foothill Athletic League. He was considered an expert in track and was widely respected by other track coaches. In 1977, Don was selected as the North Coast Section Honor Coach. His cross country teams won numerous league championships, including five consecutive titles from 1973 to 1977. Having served in the Marines, Don’s military background helped shape him as a leader. Miramonte track great Dixon Farmer ('55), considers Don one of his mentors and described Don’s approach to coaching as “stern, organized, and efficient."
